The community of Dolores Mission School is saddened to hear that our dear friend, Judge Gabriel Gutierrez, went home to God on January 13, 2021.
Judge Gabe strongly supported our work and students for decades. He believed wholeheartedly in the opportunities the school affords our students by providing a quality Jesuit education that lifts them and their families out of poverty.
His familiar and jovial face will be greatly missed. His vivacious personality was always appreciated- a constant presence at our annual golf tournament for decades, attending La Fiesta de Comunidad each year, and visiting his Adopt-A-Student scholar during our annual Donor Mass.
More importantly, he led by example, sharing his story and success to our students about his journey navigating a career in law, the significance of being of Hispanic descent, and understanding our local government. Our students were significantly impacted by his work and words. Below are two excerpts written by two former students who shared his legacy to our school community and themselves:
Dear Gutierrez Family,
I want to start off by saying thank you for all the support your family has given to the Dolores Mission family. We are so devastated to hear about your loss, we can only imagine how close you were to Mr. Gutierrez. We would like to let you know that your family will always be in our hearts and prayers. Mr. Gutierrez has helped so many young individuals like myself understand the U.S Government. One of the many things I learned was the importance of voting in California and how it may affect the government. A quote l would like for your family to take on is, “When we lose someone we love, we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind.” Once again, I want you to know the Dolores Mission family sincerely appreciates the many things your family has done to help.
Sincerely,
Justin Torres

Dear Gutierrez Family,
I would first like to offer my condolences for your loss. We want you to know that we are thinking of you during these difficult times and that our thoughts and prayers are with you. I would like to offer some comforting words that Matt Fraser once said “After a loved one passes, be encouraged by their passing and legacy. Instead of crying live an inspired, spiritual, and happy life like they did when they were here. Live each day with encouragement knowing they are proud and smiling down on you from heaven.” Mr. Gutierrez was an honorable and wise man based on what I got to know when we first met. He taught the Class of 2020 about the US government and the importance of voting. This helped us better understand the government. I would like to thank your family for the big support you have given to the Dolores Mission community. Not only have you helped students like me financially, but you have given many others opportunities with your donations. I wish your family the best and that you are safe during these difficult times.
Sincerely,
Dhalery Fuentes
